Purpose.

A clear, shared understanding of how your transformation creates value

Most digital transformations don’t fail because of the technology.

But the ones that fall short of their promise almost always share the same problem: there was no consensus on what success looked like.

I've sat in rooms where three senior leaders described the purpose of the same transformation in three different ways. Each of them was confident. And they weren’t exactly wrong, they just weren't aligned.

It’s a tricky problem because it makes sense in that room, where everyone is understandably reading the situation through their own experience and responsibilities.

The problem comes when they leave the room still thinking about ‘their’ part of the business and what success looks like in that narrow context. Then ‘their’ teams all receive slightly different messages, invariably highlighting how ‘their’ part of the transformation is the most important or critical element.

This pulls things off track, slowly at first, but it becomes increasingly dysfunctional as the purpose of the transformation fragments.

Purpose sounds like the easy part, which is why it’s often treated that way: write a vision statement about using AI to collaboratively build for a bolder tomorrow, put it in everyone’s email signature and talk about it at every quarterly town hall. Job done.

That sort of boilerplate may be fine for an annual report (it's not really, but let's pick our battles) but not when it’s the basis for actual work. When it’s time to leave the meeting room and do that work, what you need is a clear, shared agreement of how this transformation creates value across the whole business, and how success will be recognised in practical, measurable terms.

When that clarity exists, it turns everything that follows into a team effort. Decision making is easier because the purpose is established and clear. Deciding NOT to do something becomes strong leadership instead of a sacrifice or, worse, a defeat.

Here's a question worth sitting with:

If you asked three senior leaders in your organisation to explain why this transformation is happening, would they all tell the same story?

If the answer is "probably not" then that's worth addressing before the expensive stuff starts.

We've put together a practical Readiness Guide that walks through Purpose and five other focus areas that determine whether transformations deliver. It might help you out if you’re stuck.
